Louder Than You Think was the name of the home studio in the desolate Californian town of Stockton owned by the recently departed Gary Young, the original drummer of Pavement. Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were teenagers when they recorded their first songs in the early 90s with this hyperactive and “charismatic 40-year-old hippie”, who was a lover of symphonic rock, alcohol, and LSD. Featuring candid interviews, practically all the band’s archival material, and even scenes with puppets, this documentary is not only a revealing exploration of Pavement’s influential role within the lo-fi and indie-rock movements but also an emotionally devastating portrait of a pivotal figure in the band’s sound, someone who changed the lives of others while ultimately destroying his own.
