We pay tribute to a country music icon who left us this summer, the great Dolly Parton, by bringing back the documentary we premiered 20 years ago. The film delicately and humorously delves into the personal stories of a group of die-hard fans and their pilgrimage to Dollywood, the Tennessee singer, actress, and philanthropist’s theme park. The camera follows these superfans—from a couple who turned their home into a museum dedicated to the artist to devotees who overcome any financial hurdle—to explore the limits of admiration and the search for affection. For these vulnerable individuals, Dolly’s voice, aesthetic, and message of universal empathy, working-class pride, and female empowerment served as a sanctuary of healing and acceptance.
