Between the 1950s and 1970s, Scandinavia became a creative haven for prominent African American jazz musicians seeking to escape racism in the United States. In the cold, dark cities of the North, artists such as Dexter Gordon, Don Cherry, Sahib Shihab, Joe Harris, and Quincy Jones found a space to play freely, be celebrated, and raise families. Today, it is their children who, from an adult perspective, recount the lights and shadows of that legacy: family tensions, the wounds of racism, and the search for their own identity, with jazz serving as a bridge between generations.
