One Hand Don’t Clap

Kavery Dutta Kaul
1988 | United States | 92 min.

A fully restored celebration of vibrant colors and metallic drums in this film about calypso music, filmed during the 1986 carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. The film traces the history of a genre that combines irreverent humor, social commentary, and colonial resistance, from its Afro-West Indian roots in the Caribbean nation to its global rise through the Trinidadian diaspora. We journey from NYC studios to the streets of Port of Spain, guided by two legends: the charismatic grand master Lord Kitchener and the overwhelming and hilarious Calypso Rose, whose performances of the classics “Pan in A Minor” and “Solomon” are truly unforgettable.

Cast: Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts), Calypso Rose (Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis), Lord Pretender, Growling Tiger, David Rudder
