INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA

A vibrant portrait of Pauline Black, the iconic voice of 2-Tone — the groundbreaking label and movement born in Coventry that fused Jamaican ska, punk rock, and new wave, reshaping the sound of late ’70s and early ’80s Britain. Born to an Irish mother and Nigerian father and adopted by a conservative white family, Black grew up feeling she belonged nowhere. The film captures her journey of self-discovery and artistic empowerment: from confronting questions of identity and belonging to finding her voice within a scene shared with The Specials, Madness, and Bad Manners. As the charismatic frontwoman of The Selecter, Black challenged conventions with her androgynous “rude girl” style, fierce presence, and indomitable talent — securing her place as a cultural pioneer whose energy still resonates today.

Cast: Pauline Black, Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, Don Letts, Skin, Damon Albarn, Rhoda Dakar, Lynval Golding (The Specials), Mykiell Riley (Steel Pulse), Sonia Boyce, Jools Holland.

Screenings:
26 October, 7 p.m.
With warm up session by Selectress de The Morning Sounds (Les Testarudes).

30 October, 7:15 p.m.
