Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story

Michael Mabbott, Lucah Rosenberg-Lee
2024 | Canada | 98 min.

A poignant example of the price an artist pays for refusing to be dictated to, Jackie Shane was a black transgender singer in segregated 1950s Nashville. With a powerful soul and R&B voice, and a friend and mentor to Little Richard, Shane rejected primetime TV shows that restricted her appearance or excluded Black audiences and sought freedom in Toronto’s music scene before mysteriously vanishing. The extraordinary odyssey of an outcast woman of immense talent who, as she wrote, “was born but never lived.”

Cast: Jackie Shane, James Baley, Bobby Dean Blackburn, Rob Bowman, Jimmy Church, Rodney Diverlus, Andrenee Majors Douglas, Elaine Gaber-Katz, Howard Gentry, Michael Gray, Vonnie Moore, Marisa Richmond, Lorenzo Washington, Raymond Summerour
